The West Nile Virus is a disease most commonly spread to humans through mosquito bites. Most people with the disease will show no symptoms. About 20% of people however will develop symptoms such as headache, fever, body aches, and vomiting, rashes, and diarrhea.
The scary symptoms to look out for are neck stiffness, seizures, high fever, and tremors. These can eventually lead to comas, paralysis, or, in rare instances, death. While people of any age can develop these serious symptoms, people over the age of 60 or with certain pre-existing medical conditions such as organ transplants, hyper tension, or cancer are most at risk.
Currently there is no vaccine or cure for West Nile Virus. Therefore prevention is key. Using bug repellants, covering up as much as possible while outside, and getting mosquito control in your yard are the best ways to protect your family from this and other mosquito borne diseases.
