The news is telling us all sorts of things about the mysterious Zika virus, but some things are for certain: it is transmitted by mosquitoes; it can cause fevers, joint pain, and conjunctivitis; it can cause birth defects if a pregnant woman is infected or if either member of a couple attempting pregnancy is infected; and there is no known vaccination.
Amid all the hubbub, it is worth noting that as of late April, no local transmissions of the Zika virus have been reported in the United States. However, travelers to countries where Zika originated have brought it home with them.
So what is a worried homeowner to do to protect their family and BBQ guests? The best move is prevention. Make sure to eliminate any areas on your property where water can accumulate and sit for more than a few days at a time and, of course, invest in mosquito control. Eliminating the source of the problem is the always the best way to avoid disease. If there are no mosquitoes, the chance of infection is minimized.
